This presentation on Florence Nightingale will be led by Angie Strawn, MSN, RN, Omicron Delta President Elect. Angie attended the International Nightingale Conference – Florence Nightingale: Influence and Inspiration – 1820-1910 on July 14-16, 2010 held at Embley Park, the Nightingale Estate in the UK. Prior to the Conference, she spent three days exploring the history of Nightingale in London.
In Angie’s own words, “If you would have told me even just a few months ago I would be sleeping in the home of Florence Nightingale one day, I would have thought you were a bit crazy. But that experience plus more awaited me in July. A week in the U.K. set aside as a Nightingale week was the most incredible experience! July 11-13 my husband and I joined 14 other nurses from the US (plus three other husbands) for a three-day historical adventure in London. We walked the streets where Florence walked, visited St. Thomas Hospital where she designed the hospital ward system she was noted for, sat in the hospital chapel where the nursing students of the Nightingale School of Nursing used to gather for worship, and viewed the statue of her on the hospital corridor. We also heard a presentation about her from Dr. Louise Selanders, one of the five Nightingale Scholars in the world. But these days, exciting as they were, were but a prelude to what awaited us in Embley Park, the Nightingale Family Estate outside Romsey, England, two hours south of London. There we were joined by dozens of others from around the world who also gathered for the International Nightingale Conference. We had the rare privilege of staying in the estate (they have never opened the home to such an occasion before) and were able to be infused with her spirit as we sat in the family parlor, observed the book-lined walls of the library where she learned so much at her father’s knee. We also got to spend time in her second floor bedroom and gaze out the window at the vast wooded estate of her family. I could imagine Florence, as a young girl, observing the rolling hills, the beauty of nature around her as she was inspired to learn, to grow, and one day change the world”. Learn more about the life of Nightingale, her works, the characteristics that make her a legend along with an exploration of the legacy that is alive today. You are her legacy!
