The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International
22nd International Nursing Research Congress
Cancun, Mexico 11-14 July, 2011
by Marilyn Klakovich
Wow! Cancun, Mexico, a tropical paradise on Mexico’s Caribbean coast…The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International’s 22nd International Nursing Research Congress… 600+ Nurse Researchers from 30 different countries …despite the at-times stifling humidity outside, were cool in the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort Expo Convention Center coupled with excellent hospitality of both the resort and the STTI staff.
My attendance at this conference was made possible in part by applying and being awarded the spring quarter Omicron Delta Past President’s Scholarship for Professional Development. Interested members are encouraged to find out more about this opportunity and application guidelines using this link: http://www.omicrondelta.net/od/past.html
This research congress was a time for opportunities to learn about clinical innovations, cutting-edge research projects and leadership initiatives. This year’s theme, “Leading the Global Practice-Research Interface in the New Millennium,” was reflected in the more than 400 oral and poster presentations for review. International networking opportunities were around every corner, an exciting and key component for this event.
Patricia Davidson, STTI Region 2 Xi Omicron Chapter member from Sydney Australia and Counsel General of the International Council on Women’s Health Issues (ICOWHI) opened the research congress with her keynote address regarding Integrating, Policy, Practice, and Research: An Important Strategy for Improving Global Health. Complementing Patricia’s keynote address was the introduction of www.sharecare.com a new health awareness and education website launched by Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz and other colleagues. Nurses, yes that means you, are encouraged to join the nurse expert role with sharecare.com through the STTI website.
I presented a breakout session titled “Creating a Culture of Assessment to Improve Educational Outcomes in an Entry-Level Master’s Program” on behalf of my Entry-Level Masters (ELM) colleagues at Azusa Pacific University: Felicitas dela Cruz, Shirley Farr and Phyllis Esslinger. I also volunteered time to assist at the welcome counter and the International Induction Ceremony and met nurses from around the globe by doing so.
A final highlight of the event was the 2nd Annual Induction of 15 accomplished nurse researchers into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. I was amazed at the influence these women’s research has had on not only nursing but other healthcare disciplines and healthcare policy as well. See this link for a list of researchers.
